The start of the new year proved that it’s the mutants’ world and the rest of the Marvel heroes are just living in it. The X-Men kicked off 2018 by gathering for a party, hunting down lost teammates and swarming the top spots in the Fantasy Comic League rankings. Kitty Pryde led the way for the mutants in all four of her appearances. She scored 16 points and earned the first “Hero of the Week” title in 2018. Rogue made an impressive official debut in the league, as well as in her new title with on-again-off-again beau, Gambit. She scored 13 points, good enough for a strong second-place finish. Four of Kitty’s X-Men Gold teammates followed which gave the mutants the top six spots. Colossus and Storm tied for third with 11 points each, Logan snagged 10 points in fifth place and Nightcrawler took 7 points for sixth. A four-way tie rounded out the first top 10 of the year. Apart from Gambit embarking on a not-so-romantic getaway with Rogue, Black Bolt laid to rest an antagonist-turned-friend, Captain America navigated his way through Kraven’s latest hunt and Clint Barton danced with the deadly Madame Masque before she unsurprisingly turned on him. The quartet scored six points each. Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man and 2017 Hero of the Year, started the year off by uncharacteristically appearing in no titles. Deadpool, the 2017 runner-up, did the same. A pattern not expected to continue throughout the new year.
Hero and power usages are a combination of all Fantasy Comic League divisions: Asgard, Danger Room, Knowhere, Latveria, Midtown, Multiverse and Wakanda. League participants should cross-reference the official points with their hero roster and drafted powers for their heroes’ scores.
